Shell's Opinion on the Issue

In response to the numerous allegations against shell, they claim to be, "committed to corporate social responsibility". Furthermore as listed on shell's website they claim to be commitmented to human rights as guided by the Shell General Business Principles. Shell signed up to the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR) in 2000. This is a security initiative adopted by a group of governments, extractive companies and human rights NGOs. The voluntary principles provide practical guidance to companies on how to maintain the safety and security of their operations, while respecting human rights and the fundamental freedoms of people in surrounding communities. With an increased presence of government security agencies in the Niger Delta, Shell has been organizing human rights awareness workshops for senior government security officers, our staff and other stakeholders.
